Day 15 - Monday 16th July

Today we arranged with Linda to do a walk around Dallow. Mum caught the bus from Harrowgate to Linda's and then we met at Tom's corner to start the walk. Wen and Linda went off on the Mosiac Walk while Mum and I did the shorter walk (but still very invigorating!). While waiting for Linda and Mum to arrive Wen took me up to Stokes Bridge and what a magnificent view. I am very grateful to see Yorkshire from the eyes of a local. There would not be many tourists up here.

We drove the Volvo down to the old vicarage and this was where Mum and I would end our walk. We then drove back up to Tom's Corner in Linda's car. We set off at about 10:45. Mum and I took the road towards the Greygarth Monument in the hill above Greygarth. Em and Wendy were both born at Greygarth. Wendy also helped her grandparents with the farm when she was young.

After walking along the road we cut through a field up to the tower. The views as always, were to die for. I took one look at the ladder leading to the top of the tower and said no thanks!!

Back through the field to the road we came down into Greygarth. This is a little hamlet with a Methodist Church and a couple of houses. Wendy's cousin, Evelyn, now owns the house and is doing it up. She was there when we called. What an absolutely beautiful restoration job. The house has beautiful views as can be seen from the pics. Evelyn does not intend to live there, but will rent it out.

Now came the hard part of the walk - through the fields and over stiles!! We had to be very careful of mole type holes in the ground. We opened many gates and luckily only had to negotiate one stile ... but it was a beauty. Em and I had a bit of a laugh as we helped each other over this one!! Em said there used to be bulls in the next paddock and was worried about them. She picked up a stick and I had my monopod. I said I would give them a what for if they came near! Anyway no bulls!!

When we came to the farmhouse near the road, Em was also worried about the dogs they used to keep. I just said to act normally and make noise so we don't sneak up on them unawares. They did bark, but they were locked away. When we came onto the road, Mum was exhausted, so I told her to rest and I would walk up the road to get the car.

Wen and Linda still had not arrived back an hour later, so we went for a little drive around the roads to see if we could find them. We found them talking to Evelyn by the side of the road. I think they were grateful for the drive back up to Tom's Corner by then.

That evening we cooked chicken soup with wholemeal scones ... delicious. We finished it off with a toffee sticky date pudding from Rhea's. I thought I had died and gone to heaven.

Another lovely day in the Yorkshire Dales. This is only my version of the walk. I think Wen and Linda had more adventure even finding and stepping in a bog. Ha!
