Day 2 - Tuesday 1st July

We started the day with walking. Wen walked back up to Mum's to collect the car and I went for a walk along Waterside and tried to get a handle on my new camera. I was using full auto for the first couple of days before it all started coming back to me and I remembered I always used to use the Program mode. The first couple of days photos are not quite as good as what came later.

When Wen came back with Mum we set off for a drive. First stop was Pately Bridge which was a beautiful village with lovely views. Wen's father's family came from around Pately Bridge. As I was soon to learn, parking and pulling up just at the side of the road was next to non existent, so we parked in a designated area and Wen and I walked back up the road to capture the gate at the entrance. We also walked past a butcher that had a lovely selection of pork pies in the window ... yum yum.

We continued the drive with me taking lots of happy snaps of the beautiful Yorkshire countryside. I was corrected early on as I was referring to the stone walls as fences ... they are walls not fences. We drove to the Toft Lime Kiln* and had a walk around. The views over the moors were magnificent. On the way back we stopped to have a look at a Church at Wensley** and also Jervaulx Abbey***. I took lots of photos on this day as we did so much ... you can feel the history here.

It was then back to Mum's for dinner where we cooked up a chicken tikka which is one of Wen's specialities. Mandy came over after dinner to catch up.

** Holy Trinity Church, Wensley, is a redundant Anglican church in the village of Wensley, North Yorkshire, England. It is designated by English Heritage as a Grade I listed building, and is under the care of the Churches Conservation Trust. Alec Clifton-Taylor includes the church in his list of 'best' English parish churches. The present church dates from the middle of the 13th century, and is built on the foundations of an 8th century Saxon church. Additions or alterations were made in the 14th and 15th centuries, and the tower was added in 1719. When the church was vested in the Churches Conservation Trust in 2006 a number of repairs were necessary costing about £125,000.

*** Jervaulx Abbey in East Witton near the city of Ripon, was one of the great Cistercian abbeys of Yorkshire, England, founded in 1156. Initially a Savigniac foundation, the abbey was later taken over by the Cistercian order and responsibility for it was taken by Byland Abbey. Originally founded in 1145 at Fors in Wensleydale, it was moved ten years later to a site a few miles away on the banks of the River Ure. It was dissolved in 1537, and its last abbot Adam Sedbar was hanged for his part in the Pilgrimage of Grace. The ruins of the abbey are open to the public and are privately owned.

The place-name Jervaulx is first attested in 1145, where it appears as Jorvalle. The name means 'the Ure valley', in French, and is perhaps a translation of the English 'Ure-dale'.
