Day 12 - Friday 13th July

We hopped in the Volvo and set the navigator to take us to York. As we got closer to York the traffic became worse. After sitting in traffic for what seemed like an age we were finally able to slip down a side road to a parking area.

The first site that greets you in York is the wall! It was built as a walled city and the ruins of the wall are clearly visible around the inner city. Another magnificent sight is the magnificent York Cathedral. We walked through part of the wall to the Museum Gardens and into the city. Wen got hold of a lcoal map and we went towards "The Shambles" which Wen was keen to show me. I could see why ... when you approached it the buildings were lopsided and very close together. It was beautiful in a quirky way with the crooked buildings and narrow roads. I brought some soap at a little shop here.

We walked around a lot and then decided we needed a toilet. There is a distinct lack of public toilets in York. We tried the Museum, but they wanted $15 AU equivalent to get in first. After asking and talking to people wandering around we finally found an unmarked toilet down a little laneway!!

We brought some fresh salad rolls for lunch and found a nice seat (in the shade!!) in the Park ... it was very hot. We relaxed with our lunch and watched the antics of the squirells playing around us and keeping us amused.

After lunch we moysed down to Mick's place for a jam. Trusty navigator took us down the wrong street and we were knocking on the wrong number 19 before we realised. Mick took us through the loaded music room to the kitchen where we met his wife Jane. After Alred arrived we got pickin' and grinnin'. We spent a very enjoyable afternoon. I played the half size double bass they had brought. Alfred played fiddle with Mick and Wen on banjo. I have no photos of the pick as I was too busy having a good time. My plucking finger suffered as I was not used to the coarse strings and ended up with a huge blister.

As Alfred had walked we accompanied him on the way back. We enjoyed about an hour's walk along the River Ouze before parting company with Alfred. Jane provided us with dins when we returned. A very enjoyable but tiring day.

Tomorrow we are joining Mick and Alfred withe their band at a gig in York.
